The main tourist areas Kyrinia (Girne) containing many of the islands hotels and casinos as well as Girne harbour with its picturesque display of Yachts and fishing boats. Bars, open air restaurants with elegant Venetian facades and the old market place flourish here under the protection of the historic Crusader Castle dating back to the Byzantine period and showing a mixture of architectural styles from Roman onwards. Only a few steps away from these modern amenities can you find quaint cobbelled allyways beathing an air of the past. The harbour is the resting place of the world's oldest shipwreck, which us well preserved and worth a visit. here you can sit and watch theworld go by against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean sea. With its many attractions Girne harbour has an atmosphere of rustic charm and provides an insight into Cypriot history.

A short drive to the East is Bellapais village with its abbey on the slopes of the Besparmak Mountains overlooking the coastline. Here the air is rather cooler than in town, making it an ideal starting point for some gentle hill walking. Bellapais is a quiet place that seems to appeal to an older and almost exclusively British clientele.

St Hillarion Castle has been guarding the top of the Besparmak Mountains from the time of the Crusades. A truly fairytale castle. It is rumoured to be the inspiration for the castle in Walt Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. An invigorating climb to the top provides stunning views of the northern coastline.

To the very east of the island is hte Karpaz peninsula which in spite of a recently completed road is still undiscovered by the majority of visitors. Here you will find over 5km (3.1 miles) of unspoilt golden sands with hardly a tourist in site. You'd be hard pushed to find a beach as beautiful anywhere in the Mediterranean.

There are more than 250 days of uninterupted sunshine throughout the year in Northern Cyprus and with direct flights imminent and probable membership of the EU, there has never been a better place to be, whether you are looking to retire, spend a few weeks holidaying or investing for the future. Northern Cyprus is both sophisticated and charming and a place where tourism exists, but doesnt yet dominate its unique landscape. The island is justly.
